We want to Democratise Development
new Homes are needed to be built each year
of adults under the age of 35 still live at home
homes can be built on empty BCC plots of land
homes built in the UK are custom built homes
We want to use the power of data to help build communities.
We want to make finding land easy, quick and transparent.
We want to give people the opportunity to build their own home and have a real impact on the housing crisis.
We want you to come along for the journey.
How will it work?
DemoDev are working in partnership with Land Registry, Ordnance Survey and land owners to build a platform to help potential home self-builders find small scale plots of land. Along with crowd sourced information regarding the plots and area, such as facilities, schools etc. The idea is to provide as much information as possible. Including types of builds suitable and potential suppliers, craftsmen and contractors. Allowing you to make an informed decision about your project.
The Next Steps
We are in the process of engaging with Birmingham City Council around potential plots and the possibilities around collaboration. However we are looking for people interested in self-building and any other land owners such as housing associations who might want to collaborate.
Interested in self-building your own home, or own a small plot of land?
We will be in touch with updates and more details.
A WikiHouse Extension
To show how self-building can be an affordable way of making a home, Andy Reeve (Co-founder of Impact Hub Birmingham and DemoDev) embarked upon building his own WikiHouse Extension with the help of some friends. Follow the progress here.
